Fitness Enthusiast and Pharmacist, The Dose Show

What does Black Mental Wellness mean to you?

Black mental wellness means coming together as a community to advocate and amplify our black voices. Most people do not receive proper help because they are silenced or feel embarrassed to share their experiences. We need to make space for listening to our community and having the proper roadmap for those with mental health issues to follow when they need help.

How do you promote change and well-being in the Black community?

As a Black health professional and influencer, I promote change by promoting all things self-care on my channels. Whether it's physical activity and fitness, which significantly improves mental health; or whether it's simply showcasing positivity, people feel happy when they see my page. As a pharmacist, we definitely help the mental health community by helping people identify when pharmacologic therapy is appropriate.

What are some things that we should know about your area of expertise?

Pharmacists are drug experts and know how to help people manage their medications. A lot of drugs are meant to be lifelong treatments and when patients stop abruptly, it can cause a host of side effects. It's important to continue to counsel patients on the proper way to take their medications and stay compliant.

What are your recommendations for ending stigma in the Black community?

Advocation and communication. Continuing to lift our voices about the issue is very important.

How do you make time for your own wellness and self-care?

I fit self-care into my schedule daily. Before I start my day, I make sure that I read and meditate before I jump into the chaos of the day. Then I make sure I do my skin care routine along with exercising 5 days out of the week.

What are your top 5 favorite wellness and self-care strategies?

  1. Reading

  2. Meditation

  3. Stretching

  4. Skin care

  5. Physical exercise

What resources do you find most helpful to encourage mental health and wellness?

My fitness app (www.drrobinbapp.com) is super important. I focus on mindset, nutrition and effective workouts on my app.
